Tabarca

Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community and is located opposite the city of Alicante, 11 nautical miles off the coast and near the headland of Santa Pola. In fact, it is more than just an island, as it is a small archipelago that includes the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao, as well as the Isla de Tabarca itself. It is approximately 1,800 metres long and measures approximately 400 metres wide at its widest point.

Pirate Island

In the past, the shores were a refuge for Berber pirates and in the 18th century King Carlos III ordered the island to be fortified and a city built, which would house several families of Genoese fishermen held captive in the Tunisian coastal town of Tabarka. The walls surrounding the city have been officially declared a historical and artistic site and a cultural heritage.

Marine reserve

The island's waters have also been officially declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve for their excellent quality and for the biodiversity of its flora and fauna.

Tabarca can be reached from the port of Santa Pola. In 25 minutes the ferry from Tabarca will take you there. You can buy your tickets online or at the port of Santa Pola.
